Critical Zero

Toronto is known for its wide variety of music, whether it’s psychedelic, jazz, hardcore, or punk, there are so many pockets and different scenes that sometimes we miss each other. Sub-Sessions are a concert series taking place at BSMT 254 with the goal of presenting diverse artists in an atmospheric setting. This was our first time attending one and it was one of our favourite shows of the year.

The Sub-Sessions team and BSMT 254 do an outstanding job of creating vibe and atmosphere. Fog machines, lights, and even a TV by the bar livestreaming the stage are what made this night stand out and not just another show. The show was on a Wednesday, and as a promoter that can be a very difficult night to promote. The venue was packed and the spirits were high, The lineup of the night was The Black Void, Black Budget, and Ether Girls.

The Black Void took the stage first, the fog started, and the room started dancing. We have been wanting to photograph and see their set for a few years now and they did not disappoint. Their set featured psychedelic surf punk vibes with an amazing cover of The Hives’ “Hate to Say I Told You So.” One of our favourite moments was the performance of “F**k You Spotify,” an overall great set.

Black Budget hit the stage shortly after and it was a punk rock fog fest. Lights were shining and the band was smashing into each other on stage. A very physical and high-energy set.

Ether Girls closed out the night and they were awesome. Their sound reminded us of The B-52s mixed with jazz and post-punk. They had synths and a dance rock sound that got the room moving. With fog and lights, this band was the perfect way to close out the night.

Sub-session's really brought together perfect night featuring diversely curated underground bands, with a highly submersive psychedelic atmosphere. This is our jam totally and we will be back again.
