The Horseshoe Tavern

The Velveteins absolutely perfected the sound while adding their own identity, richness, and feelings to the songs.”

Last Sunday was one for the books as we were able to attend The Velveteins playing at The Horseshoe Tavern for this years Canadian Music Week. This was especially exciting - it's a band we've been following for at least three years. Outside of punk rock, SoCal sound is a big genre that we enjoy. I've heard many bands try to incorporate these sounds into their music; however, it's rare that they can create their own personalized and modern approach to a song style inspired by 50s rock and roll—a genre popularized by California bands like The Buttertones, early The Frights, Shannon and the Clams, and The Red Pears.

The Velveteins absolutely perfected the sound while adding their own identity, richness, and feelings to the songs. Never once did we find the sound lacking, nor did we wish for more—they hit every mark. Each member brought their best to the table, with the harmonies of the vocals, the layers of sound, and the energy. This was especially evident when hearing "Midnight Surf" played live.

One big highlight of the night was the incredible tones coming from the stage—not only from the guitars but also from the bass, drums, synths, and vocal harmonies. As you know by now, we’re massive fans of good tone. The guitars were twangy, with a 50s reverb and delay tone. At times they got loud, and at other times very quiet and soft. The dynamics of this show were some of the best we’ve seen this year. During the song “Hanging from the Ceiling,” the band demonstrated exactly that.

We highly recommend you follow this band and go out and see their live shows!
