SUN JUnkies Release show
11. 18. 2023 [TORONTO]
As many of our nights have started, we took the infamous subway and streetcar and made our way to the famous Horseshoe Tavern. If you’ve been following Critical Zero, we've shared the history of this incredible venue. If you aren’t aware, you must check it out!
We were very excited for this night; Sun Junkies have been a band that we’ve featured on our Critical Zero Spotlight multiple times, and their songs are always in our playlist rotation. After meeting them at the Static Safari EP Release show at Two Doors Down in Brantford, we knew we had to attend this show. The event was SOLD OUT, and we were fortunate to secure tickets; it was packed!
The night kicked off with a band that performed at our FIRST Critical Zero event, Strawberry Cough. We love these guys! Their music, attitude, vibe, and energy embody everything you'd want in a band. Their set that night was particularly special. The tones were off the charts, the drums were extremely groovy, and the bass held it down. The crowd danced, moshed, and smiles illuminated the room. Strawberry Cough also played one of our favorite live songs, "Blush." This band is definitely a must-see live - we've been telling you!
Next up was Heavy Sweater, the Toronto locals who put on a spectacular show! The audience danced, moshed, and sang along to their lyrics. A consistent theme of the night was the exceptional stage presence and amazing performances. It was our first time seeing Heavy Sweater perform, and it certainly won't be the last.
Following them was Madfolk; it was also our first experience seeing them live. Once again, the crowd sang along, danced, and went wild for Madfolk. It was heartwarming to witness the joy on people's faces as the band played. With their great folk-punk tunes, this is another band we will definitely catch live again.
Last but not least, the headlining act, Sun Junkies! Just before they took the stage, we spoke with a couple who had traveled 13 hours to see them; that alone should tell you about their fans' dedication. As soon as they began their set, the crowd went absolutely crazy—people were moshing, singing along to almost every word, crowdsurfing, and having the time of their lives. I got hit in the head by crowdsurfers multiple times, and my only regret is not crowdsurfing myself. The band incorporated an orchestra section into most of their songs, adding a nice touch to their melodic indie rock and garage sound. They had confetti, a colourful parachute they launched during their set on the dance floor, and many more surprises we won’t spoil—so you absolutely have to catch a Sun Junkies show.
